Mine would say, “I’m in massive debt from student loans but I am not surprised or mad about it because I understand how life works and I signed up for this when I literally signed the paperwork that dictated the terms of my loan arrangement. I wanted to spend four years learning things, making friends, making mistakes, and growing up, but I couldn’t pay for it. Normally, not being able to pay for something means you don’t get to do it, but in this case, some organization paid for it temporarily. If they hadn’t, I would not be the person I am today with the job that I have today and the friends that I have today. College made me a functioning, socialized human being with marketable skills. It sure would be nice if people didn’t have to pay for things they didn’t want to pay for, except it would also be terrible. I will continue to pay because the service I received was valuable, because it’s what I signed up for, and because I’m not an entitled sack of poop.”
But that probably wouldn’t fit on a single page.
I think I found your first draft Dan! It was written on the back of a dead child whose family was too poor to afford healthcare:
“My name is Dan O’Brien. For my dayjob I bust my bum writing up wonderful articles for CRACKED about HILARIOUS topics such as “How to Disarm a Chimpanzee”, “8 (Terrible) Ideas to Replace the Show Lost” and “The 17 Craziest Tweets of Yoko Ono” in which I just list tweets Yoko Ono has tweeted and I riff and I riff and I riff. Man, people love lists. I’m straying.
More to the point, in my spare time I’ve decided it is my duty to shit on a movement that speaks to a larger issue at hand in our country. What’s the deal with these people amiright?!? ”I am the 99%”?! They are all whiner, loser slackers who need to get off the internet already and GET A JOB. GET OFF THE INTERNET ALREADY AND GET A JOB. I mean look at me! I went to college, I paid for it using student loans, I pay back said student loans AND I’M FINE! Why can’t anyone get it through their thick skulls that I AM FINE AND LOGICALLY THINGS WOULD BE FINE FOR EVERYONE ELSE IF THEY JUST DO WHAT I DO?!”
Ok I don’t have the mental stamina to keep up this game. Dan O’Brien, people like YOU are a big part of the problem. Yes, the Occupy Wall St protests are disorganized, but that doesn’t diminish the value of their right to protest. It’s very easy to look at these people and say “these are the slackers, these are the ones who don’t want to pay their taxes, these are the ones who think the goverment should pay for everything, etc” but you are missing the message. What are you doing when you are saying “I am better than these people who are venting their frustrations over what is happening in this country”?
You are essentially saying:
- I am for the current status quo, a system under which coporate interests matter more in an election than any vote.
- I am for a legal system under which the role of corporate personhood has allowed for corporate entities to, in many cases, have the same rights as a human being — the one difference being that a corporate entity has a lot more money than the average human being and money speaks louder than words in Washington.
- I am for a system under which our government is willing to hold our entire economy hostage for the interests of the top earning 1% of the country, a 1% that on average is paying far less as a percentage of their salary than the rest of the country in taxes so they can “protect jobs” despite the fact that unemployment has remained consistently high, compensation has stagnated for the middle class for decades and that companies are sitting on giant cash reserves at a time when reinvestment of those reserves back into the economy would stimulate job growth and spending.
- Besides being for a government that doesn’t work in my best interests, I also have no ability to understand how many factors are working against most people in this country whose families have always been poor and uneducated. WHY DONT THEY JUST GO TO COLLEGE AND GET JOBS?!?
I could keep going. At the end of the day I think it’s a total lack of perspective that has morons like you spouting off garbage like this on a daily basis. You are just another misinformed asshole with a mouth who cannot put themselves in the shoes of someone different than themselves. The saddest part? LOTS of people think like you Dan O’Brien. LOTS of people. We have access to so much information on a daily basis, but people are more interested in eye candy, soundbites and “8 Reasons Why The Next Season Of The Jersey Shore Should Film In My Asshole” because the full effect of what’s happening with our economy and our government has yet to impact them PERSONALLY.
No, I think he was saying people like the dude in this picture are kind of hijacking this movement and claiming victimhood using student fucking loans as their ticket. Again, if you’re in your 20s with a degree and no kids, YOU AREN’T POOR OR DISPOSSESSED, YOU’RE JUST BROKE LIKE YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE IN YOUR 20s.
This Dan O’Brien guy really has it correct. Additionally, MY perspective is that I did NOT go to college, I have ZERO debt, and, oh look! I have an AMAZING job in NYC where I’m paid VERY well, with plenty of room for growth and I did it basically ALL on my own. So, to all the suckers who blew 150k on parties and bullshit you’ll get absolutely no sympathy from me. O’Brien is correct, it’s not like you signed up for the loan without knowing the terms. You knew goddamn well that you’d be on the hook for that money eventually and shame on you for trying to weasel out of it.
Fucking cry babies.
