“I am stably employed. But I’ve had to juggle to get my jobs, and I see every inch of the 50-mile fall below me to the pits of despair. There is not a rail. I consider success to be a combination of opportunity and preparation. If opportunity is not there, then your preparation, no matter what it consists of - a sound mind, an optimistic spirit, a German work ethic - cannot make success happen.

I don’t know if you’re joking, but boasting about your excellent job in New York City and ridiculing those who are less fortunate than you is just about the most callous, insensitive, and downright cruel decision I have seen any blogger make in the last five years. If only the law did not prohibit violent actions.”

Let me clarify something about my insensitivity for you, and I’ll make it short and keep it simple. I moved to New York with literally nothing besides a few changes of clothes in a bag. I had no job (having just quit my OK job at Whole Foods), no apartment and 2,000$. Everything I have now: my great apartment in Park Slope, my job, my friends- I did it all myself. Do you want to know how I did it? I wanted something bad enough and I went out and I worked harder than anyone else to get it, and I took it. I took possession of my dreams. I didn’t sit around waiting for something to happen, or whining about being terrified of failing (your pits of despair).

If you live your life waiting around for something to happen to you or depending on other people to give you something you feel you deserve the world is going to be a very scary and harsh place for you. Preparation and opportunity don’t mean a whole lot when you can see your dreams but you don’t reach out to take them.

Fortes fortuna adiuvat.
