Forgive me, but it feels like you’re equating versatility with caliber.
I’m a long-time “Evian-as-Absolut” drinker. But if vodka were a blood-type, it would be O-negative, the universal donor. It can be mixed with anything. Vodka is the flexible black jacket you can wear anywhere. But it’s not a suit, like whiskey, or a costume, like tequila. It doesn’t have the distinctiveness of gin, or the sleekness of rum. No one outside of Russia (Eastern Europe) drinks vodka for its own sake. Even the martini needs vermouth. This isn’t true for other spirits, which are often consumed solo.
Vodka has breath, but not depth. It’s not the best, it’s just the most useful.


And tonight I remember Generic. Miss that guy. This post is my favorite of his.
