Ryan Adams — “Hey There, Miss Lovely”

This song is from a performance that Ryan gave 10-28-1999 at the Exit/In. While it’s excellent for many reasons, for me it’s notable that this cut, “Hey There, Miss Lovely” is a very early, perhaps the first recorded iteration of the song “These Girls” which was released a full 8 years later on Easy Tiger. The lyrics are very different, but the melody and the guitar parts are basically the same. Interesting to think that Ryan had this song kicking around for almost ten years before he finally decided to record and release it. Also, he mentions writing “In My Time Of Need” for a Whiskeytown album but it didn’t make it on the record.

The first link above will direct you to the Archive.org page where you can download this entire performance for yourself. Of the 17 tracks there are 5 great cuts with Ryan and Gillian Welch, and boy, are they pretty.
