A Hidden America: Living in Cars, Tents and Cheap Motels *Video Report*

The following must-see 60 Minutes segment further highlights the deteriorating economic conditions across the United States.

In case you didn’t know, I grew up white trash in a poor area of Sacramento, California. Among many other ridiculous scenarios I once lived in a car for a few nights, another time I lived in a trailer park for many months until the heater gave me, my brother and my dad carbon monoxide poisoning. I am now a healthy, normal functioning part of society who had everything I have needed pretty much from the age of 10 on. I went to an upper middle class high school, I turned out ok. I am incredibly grateful for every fucked up moment of my life, because it has made be who I am. Tonight I watched this video, and I will admit I am a little bit drunk, but that doesn’t change the fact that this video really hit home to me.

My point here is that kids are amazing. They are so strong and awesome. I wish I were half as strong now as I was when I was dealing with all this shit that I didn’t even know was bad. I was just living my life. Once you grow up and see how things are “supposed to be” you start to judge people, you start to judge your own life, you start to be hurt by the fact that you might not be quite normal. You start to let the bad things that happened to you in. You stop being as strong as the amazing kids in this video are.

Anyway, this is really long winded for me, I never do this. I just can’t express enough how touched I was by this video. You should really watch it and pay attention to how it makes you feel.

“it’s only life, you do what you need to do, right?” — When a young girl is asked about what it is to live in a van with her father and brother. Unreal.
