Hahahahah what the fuck, Bixi bikes are such tanks I refuse to ride them—they weigh ~35 pounds, have three internally-geared speeds, are basically unbreakable. You guys have weird fucking oppositions to bikeshare. It’s certainly not for me but I don’t begrudge it and I’m really glad that cities have it. It means more people ride bikes and there’s a bigger push for more bike-specific stuff—not lanes, necessarily, but racks, and policies, and attitudes that acknowledge cyclists as humans, not pieces of meat to be repeatedly rammed and run over by cars and trucks. That means when a cyclist is rammed and run over by cars, they at least have a course of retribution.

Even though I work in bike advocacy, I largely fall into the old-school mentality of vehicular city cycling with a heavy dose of assholeishness (I ride fast, weave, lane splint, run lights and stop signs, shoal, eschew bike lanes)—and I think bikeshare is totally cool. Literally every dumb thing someone does on a bikeshare bike is a dumb thing someone has done on their own bike—and 99.9 percent of the time that dumb thing is still safer than driving over the speed limit in a 4,000 pound metal death machine.

I will probably delete this because I don’t have the energy to fight with anyone and I am so sick of talking about bikes. On one hand, it’s really satisfying to see New York losing its shit over transportation planning’s most harmless innovation. On the other, I can’t wait until it’s next year so all of you shut the fuck up.

AB: I agree with you but… I think for 100$ you can buy someone a pretty decent bike, helmets should be mandatory and wish it wasn’t run by citi. Anyway, they tore out a ton of free bike racks for this project and that sucks too.
